INCIDENTAL GARDEN DESIGNED BY SOPHIE WALKER
In 2014 Sophie Walker became the youngest woman to design a garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show with Cave Pavilion and this year GROW London is delighted to feature this emerging talent.
Sophie will create Incidental Garden over the course of the fair as visitor’s watch. Incidental Garden is a performance in which the garden is formed. A trace of continuous movement leaves behind a mark, like a drawing which emerges in time.
“Incidental Garden is a celebration of what it means to make a garden – it requires playfulness and imagination. If we come to a space -any space- believing that an ordinary act like walking can give way to something marvellous, we can make a garden. Incidental Garden emerges as we impact our surroundings. The garden insists upon a transaction of exchange and Incidental Garden is a record of a continued process, a practice and an investigation. The garden has everything to do with time, continuity and gradual change; it is proof of history as a culmination of all that was, grown over its past self.”

After studying Art History, Sophie returned to her studies to qualify in horticulture, plant science and later, garden design. Based in London, Sophie practices in the UK and abroad.
Sophie has previously won the People’s Choice Award at RHS Hampton Court Palace for her A Valley Garden as well as a RHS Silver-Gilt Medal Show Garden and an RHS Chelsea Flower Show Silver Medal for Cave Pavilion.
Aside from the designing and making of gardens, Sophie also lectures on conceptual garden design and on the Japanese garden. A qualified horticulturalist, Sophie advises on planting, maintenance and the garden environment.
The Japanese Garden, by Sophie Walker is published by Phaidon in Spring 2017.
