GROW LONDON MARQUEE DESIGN
We can’t wait to welcome you into the wonderfully cool, air-conditioned GROW London marquee, which is being dressed for the occasion by award-winning landscape designer Stephen Woodhams. Transforming the marquee’s interior - including the outside entrance and decking, the entrance marquee and the champagne bar - through a clever and contemporary design, Stephen’s ‘Urban Rustic’ interior will perfectly complement the quality of the plants and products on show.
Describing the concept, Stephen explains: “our designs have always been distinguished by strong architectural lines and modern materials, but recently we’ve noticed a growing interest in more organic materials, natural shapes, and a return to traditional techniques and crafts such as hedge-laying, basket-weaving and wood carving. We wanted to show how ‘rustic’ elements can be used to great effect in the garden when contrasted with ‘urban’ materials such as raw concrete and rusted metal.
The willow-weave and split-hazel wattle used outside the entrance create wonderful, highly textured fencing panels within a timber frame. Pine trees (Pinus wallichiana and Pinus mugo) fill the pots, surrounded by mulched pine bark chips, whilst the pinewood console tables sit beautifully alongside the rich rust-brown trunks of Australian tree ferns, enhanced by orange accents in the planting. The three distinct areas in the foyer (‘Urban Terrace Garden,’ ‘Summer Garden,’ ‘Urban Country Garden’) and marquee combine plain grey ‘pimple’ concrete paving with a concrete table and timber benches. The champagne bar is enclosed by trellis panels, designed especially for GROW, with steel mesh reinforcements set within painted timber frames.
Exterior furniture pieces feature ‘hydro’ upholstery, which can be left out all year and dry quickly after rain. There are now over 300 exterior fabrics to choose from, so there is bound to be one that works with your interior. To blur even further the boundary between interior and exterior spaces – our design studio is renowned for the ‘Inside-Outside’ concept – we have used some lovely light fittings, from concrete pendant lamps to hanging glass lanterns and floor lamps.”
